Slag is a mixture of metal oxides and silicon dioxide that is formed when iron ore, coke, and limestone are heated together in a blast furnace. The slag is a byproduct of the steelmaking process and is composed of various impurities that are removed from the molten steel. The slag is typically transported from the steel mill furnace to a slag pit or dump site, where it is cooled and solidified before being used for various applications.
An open-top slag car is a type of railroad car used in the steel industry to transport molten slag from the steelmaking process. Slag cars typically have a capacity of 80 to 160 tons. The car is designed with an open top to allow for easy loading and unloading of the slag. The car is typically made of steel and is mounted on a set of wheels that run on railroad tracks.
There is a short video demonstration run of these cars here: Open-Top Slag railroad cars in mp4 format.
